The Cropwell Mill
Old MIll History
The Old MIll History story goes back over 150 years when The “Old Mill”, formerly known as “Cropwell Mill”, built in 1860, was once at the centre of the important gypsum business. Gypsum, also known as plaster of Paris, is a rare and valuable mineral and Cropwell Bishop produced some of the best in Europe.
A century ago, the versatile gypsum played an important role in the manufacture of paper, cement, beer, paint, pottery, manures, medicines and other products, and was in very high demand.
Also mined in Cumbria and Sussex, it is Cropwell Bishop that produced the finest and largest quantities, with 6 mines within 30 miles of the village.
In Nottingham entrepreneurial fashion and thanks to the industrial revolution, “Cropwell Mill” became the epicentre for the industry, and this majestic mill refined, ground, and packed the mineral, before it was shipped out on barges along the Grantham Canal.

THE OLD MILL ESTATE
Renovated To The Present
The Old Mill now forms part of the Chris Allsop portfolio of companies, a family-owned and run business founded in Nottingham in 1986.
From its very humble beginnings, our business has grown into a leading provider of commercial property services and industrial solutions; incorporating equipment hire, scrap metal recycling and commercial and residential development.
One of our flagship projects is the land surrounding The Old Mill. Purchased in 1994 and converted into a multi-use industrial estate, “Canalside” comprises of warehousing, business units and office space, and the renovation of the former Gypsum Works site.
We pride ourselves on being the chosen provider for a diverse clientele, and for being recognised by several leading bodies, including BMRA and the Environment Agency for our ongoing commitment to quality and best practice within our industry.
